Dear Mr. Gakheladze,
On behalf of the U.S. government and USAID/Caucasus, I want to congratulate you on the success of the first-ever mayoral debates. My staff and I want to thank you, and the staff of the Georgia Public Broadcaster, for the extra effort that you took to ensure that these first live televised political debates became a success.
Please extend a special thanks to Mr. Giorgi Chanturia, who was actively involved in all stages of planning and organizing of the debates. I would also like to recognize Zura Gujabidze, Khatuna Berdzenishvili, Maia Bichikashvili, and Eka Mishveladze for their hard work and extra attention.

I believe these debates can help to usher in a change in Georgia's political culture, and by hosting these debates GPB has become an important agent of that change. USAID will continue to be active in increasing civic and media participation in these and future elections. We would welcome GPB as a partner in those efforts.

We are proud that US AID was able to support this important project. These debates and the interest generated by the candidates, the political parties and public show that real change can happen at the ballot box, and not just in the streets. I think the candidates, the political parties and public all see the value of issue-based debates. Congratulations again.

Jonathan M. Conly
